| Berks County Celebrates 50,000 Acres of Preserved Farmland | ![]() |
On October 19, 2007, Berks County celebrated the 50,000th acre of preserved farmland that has been protected by the county and state program. Adopt An Acre Inc. congratulates the staff and board of directors who have worked with the farm community in accomplishing this milestone. We also want to commend the farm owners who have committed their land to agricultural production in perpetuity.
The Berks County Commissioners and the Berks County Agricultural Land Preservation Board held a celebration and ceremony on the Benjamin & Patricia Scheffler Farm, east of Shartlesville to commemorate this achievement. PA Secretary of Agriculture Dennis Wolff convened a meeting of the PA State Agricultural Land Preservation Board as part of this event.
To commemorate this accomplishment, Adopt An Acre Inc. has partnered with renowned redware potter Lester Breininger of Robesonia in offering another collectible plate. Breininger’s plate created for the 10,000th acre of preserved farmland has been sold out, and only a few of the 25,000 acre plates remain available for purchase. The 50,000 acre plate features dairy cattle, the leading livestock enterprise in Berks County, and is a special shade of green. There are now only a few of the 100 plates created by Breininger left. You can order your plate by completing and printing this form and returning it with your donation of $100 per plate.
We need to continue our leadership role in saving farms for future generations. Your continued support makes it possible to keep farms growing crops rather than houses.
Sincerely,
Sheila Miller
