About us...
Adopt An Acre Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been created to support and supplement the existing efforts of a multitude of agencies that are protecting land from development pressures. Conservation easements are the tool through which government, conservancies, and land trusts preserve these vital acres from being converted into the final cash crop of houses or industrial sites.
With the new millennium, volunteer directors involved with farmland preservation in Berks County were encouraged by the county commissioners to find avenues to supplement the investment being made by governments at all levels in the area of farmland and open space preservation. Adopt An Acre was organized in 2004 by Victoria Kintzer, West Lawn, vice chairman of the Berks Agricultural Land Preservation Board, with the assistance of former state representative Sheila Miller, Womelsdorf, who also served as a director of the county board since its inception in 1988. They were joined by Craig Dirks, a West Lawn resident, who has been supporting farmland preservation through his generous donations of time and talent. His grandfather’s farm near Robesonia, under the ownership of the Wolfskill family, was preserved through the county program. Craig’s artistic talents have created beautiful pieces of hardwood furniture which he has donated to farmland preservation fundraising efforts, including a piece that will be part of the 2007 Farm City Council’s raffle.
Kintzer, Miller and Dirks have been joined by others who believe we need to save our farmland and other important open space areas. Current board members include: Daniel J. Brennan, Hamburg; Tara Ebling, Bethel; Chris Hartman, Bern Township; Clyde Myers, Bernville; Eric J. Rickenbach, Rehrersburg; and Larry Smeltz, Strausstown. Anyone interested in serving on the Board should contact Victoria Kintzer, president of Adopt An Acre Inc. for more information on how to get involved.
